Frequently
Asked Questions
What should I wear in class?
Comfortable
exercise clothing and bare feet. Please be sure if you wear shorts that
they are long enough to not be revealing in yoga postures.
Can I eat
right before class?
It is best to have an empty stomach during yoga
practice. Try to refrain from eating a meal at least two hours before
class.
What if I am
not flexible at all?
That’s fine. Just begin where you are. More
flexibility of body and mind will come with time and practice.
Do I have to
start in beginner class even if I am athletic and fit?
The beginner lessons at CNY Yoga Center are an
important foundation for practice here. You will learn the proper
alignment for the safety of your body in poses, Sanskrit names for
postures, and Pranayama techniques that you will be expected to know
without further instruction at the intermediate level.
Can I practice
during pregnancy?
Absolutely. We recommend that pregnant women come to
our beginner level classes. We will give you modifications for some
postures that are contraindicated during pregnancy.
Am I too old
to do yoga?
We have had students as young as 12 and as old as 74
enjoy our classes. Everyone works within their own limitations and
celebrates their abilities.
Will yoga help
me lose weight?
Regular yoga practice can aid in weight loss. It
creates more muscle, which increases metabolism. It also helps you become
more in tune with your body and its needs, so you begin to know what foods
and how much of them are good for you. The Conscious Eating Workshop
offered here is also helpful for learning to eat with awareness and
gratitude.
What books
should I read?
We regularly recommend books in our classes and
workshops. Beginners greatly benefit from the Kripalu Yoga Posture Sheets.
These will help you follow our lesson plans at home. In addition to our
recommendations, you can browse in the Bookshop before and after class and
notice what sparks your interest. You may be intuitively led to just what
you need right now.
Is yoga a
religion?
No. Yoga is a life science. It does have
similarities in its philosophy to many of the world’s great religions
and was influenced by those as it developed. If you do practice a
religion, yoga can help deepen your experience of it.
How often
should I do yoga?
Regular study and practice of yoga is most
beneficial. We recommend daily practice of yoga and meditation. This is
why we do not offer classes on a drop-in basis. Taking a class once in a
while is not as safe or effective as making a commitment to it and doing
it regularly. |
